In the mid-1980's, the Mattress Factory initiated the Artist Limited Edition project to provide artists with the opportunity to create editions of small works that are permanent and accessible to the public long after their temporary installations were dismantled. These prints or objects also serve as documentation of each artist's way of engaging the creative process.
Each situation is unique and artists may choose to make prints, small objects, or both. Artists, assisted by museum staff, work with a variety of professional printmaking studios, foundries, and fabrication workshops to produce the editions. The Artist Limited Edition project enables artists who work in the medium of site-specific installations to make smaller, more intimate works.
In celebration of its 35th anniversary the museum has unveiled a display of excerpts from all Artist Limited Editions since the beginning of the program. Hung gallery style in the BoxSpring Cafe and in the museum curator's case in the MF Gift Shop, this retrospective includes examples from all works produced, incorporating print, film, sculpture, audio, performance and organic elements.
