Professional Development

Workshops and teacher in-service programs introduce teachers to contemporary installation art, Mattress Factory history, the artist residency program, and ongoing educational opportunities and resources. Educators work with the museum's staff to explore connections between art and multiple disciplines, with an eye toward integrating contemporary art into classroom teaching. Teachers can closely examine the creative process that artists undertake while in residence at the Mattress Factory. Workshops show teachers various ways of effectively incorporating installation art lessons into a classroom setting. Teacher workshops may take place in the museum or at your school.

Teacher professional development at the Mattress Factory can be tailored to your school's needs and interests. Whole or half-day sessions are facilitated by Mattress Factory staff and provide in-depth experiences that translate to the classroom. Please contact the museum's Education Department to discuss possible program ideas for your school or school district's educators. TEACHER WORKSHOP:
Body Shop - Exploring Identity with 3-D Materials
Teachers of all disciplines
Rescheduled for Winter 2010  |  9:30AM - 3:00PM
$40 (Includes lunch)  |  5 ACT 48 Hours

The Mattress Factory and artist Dennis Bergevin partner to provide a daylong workshop that explores the different identities people form in our society and the impact self image and societal views have upon us.

The Mattress Factory's permanent installation, It's All About ME, Not You! by Greer Lankton will serve as the framework for initial study. Participants will experience the installation and participate in dialogue about the work and the artist's life.

Artist Dennis Bergevin will discuss the impact of Greer's piece on him as an artist and person as well as how he uses his art as a tool to explore identity. Samples of his work and information on his working process will also be shared.

The remainder of the workshop will be spent experimenting with non-traditional materials to create soft sculptures/dolls/puppets to help us examine our own identity.

The workshop will conclude with critique and conversation on how these activities and ideas can be incorporated into your class curriculum.

Class size is limited. Early registration recommended.
