The Factory 14s Fall 2007 course will provide an atmosphere for young artists to explore their ideas, and to share and develop concepts with others. Students will be introduced to a wide variety of art-making processes, and will be encouraged to develop their own skills. Local artist Tom Sarver will mentor students in the practice of working as a professional artist, and will provide the class with the skills to develop and talk about their own work.
New to Factory 14s, this class is a partnership with the Carnegie Mellon University Robotics Institute. The Robotics Institute will provide materials and technical support to introduce students to new robotic technoloy. Students will be encouraged to experiment with the technology, and to incorporate it into their installations that may include drawing, sewing, sculpture and other art media.
Factory 14s students have the unique opportunity to explore site-specific installation by collaborating on the construction of their own work on the ground of the Mattress Factory. This program functions in a similar fashion to the museum's world-renowned, artist residency and exhibition program. This is an excellent opportunity for young people interested in pursuing careers in the arts.
